SCANOLOGY to Participate in the 4th Liangzhu Forum, Advancing Cultural Heritage Preservation Through 3D Digitization
Date: 2026-10-16

The 4th Liangzhu Forum will be held in Hangzhou, China, from October 18 to 20, 2026, under the theme “Bridging the Past and the Future: Safeguarding Cultural Heritage for Our Times.”

As a technology company committed to advancing 3D digitization, SCANOLOGY continues to explore how 3D scanning can support cultural heritage preservation, digital documentation, and restoration. Through its ongoing engagement with cultural heritage initiatives and practical restoration projects, the company is contributing to the integration of digital technologies and traditional conservation practices.

Continuing Cultural Exchange in Liangzhu Through Technology and Innovation

SCANOLOGY has actively participated in cultural heritage exchanges and initiatives in Hangzhou, exploring how 3D digitization can contribute to the preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage.

In April 2025, the company participated in the 3rd UNESCO High-Level Forum on Museums, held in Hangzhou. The forum brought together museum professionals and experts to discuss the evolving role of museums in cultural communication, education, and technological innovation.

As the 4th Liangzhu Forum approaches, SCANOLOGY looks forward to contributing to broader discussions on the role of technological innovation in safeguarding cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations.

From 3D Scanning to Transparent Restoration: Giving Cultural Heritage a New Lease on Life

3D scanning is creating new possibilities for cultural heritage preservation. By capturing the geometry and surface details of artifacts without physical contact, 3D scanning helps establish digital records and provides data for subsequent reconstruction and restoration.

A practical example can be found in the ancient ceramic restoration project at Zhejiang Provincial Museum.

On April 21, 2026, the museum opened the exhibition Restoration & Decoration – The Art of Ceramic Repair and Ornamentation, showcasing traditional ceramic repair techniques alongside contemporary restoration approaches. One highlight was transparent restoration supported by 3DeVOK professional 3D scanning, digital reconstruction, and 3D printing.

In this project, the 3DeVOK MT professional 3D scanner was used to capture fragmented ancient ceramic artifacts. The resulting 3D data supported digital modeling and reconstruction, helping restoration specialists study the original forms and develop restoration plans for missing sections.

Using 3D-printed transparent components, the restoration team could reconstruct missing areas while keeping the original fragments visible. This approach helps preserve the historical authenticity of the artifacts while making restoration interventions easier to identify and understand.

The project demonstrates how portable 3D scanning can support non-contact data acquisition, digital reconstruction, and more transparent restoration workflows. It also illustrates how digital technologies can complement traditional conservation expertise rather than replace it.

Expanding the Applications of 3D Digitization in Cultural Heritage Preservation

Beyond individual restoration projects, 3D digitization offers broader possibilities for cultural heritage research, documentation, and public engagement.

By converting physical artifacts into digital 3D data, scanning technology can support:

  • Digital documentation: Recording artifact geometry and surface details for research and preservation.
  • Restoration planning: Providing digital references for analyzing missing structures and developing reconstruction plans.
  • Digital archiving: Creating reusable 3D assets for future study, comparison, and documentation.
  • Public engagement: Supporting digital displays and interactive experiences that help audiences better understand cultural artifacts and restoration processes.

The Zhejiang Provincial Museum project illustrates how a workflow combining 3D scanning, digital modeling, and 3D printing can support the preservation and interpretation of ancient ceramics.

As digital technologies continue to develop, their role in cultural heritage preservation is expanding from data acquisition to a wider range of research, restoration, and communication applications.

Looking Ahead to the Liangzhu Forum: Exploring New Possibilities for Cultural Heritage Preservation

Cultural heritage preservation requires both respect for historical authenticity and continued exploration of effective conservation methods. Digital technologies provide new tools for documenting artifacts, supporting restoration decisions, and making cultural heritage more accessible to researchers and the public.

Through its participation in cultural heritage initiatives and its practical work in 3D digitization, SCANOLOGY will continue to explore how 3D scanning technology can contribute to heritage preservation and digital innovation.

As the 4th Liangzhu Forum brings together participants to discuss cultural heritage protection and international exchange, SCANOLOGY looks forward to exploring new possibilities for connecting technology, cultural heritage, and the future.
