Han Sanlao Stone Chamber is located inside Xiling Seal Art Society, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. It was built in 1922, with a number of historical collections dating from the Wei State (220-265) of the Three Kingdoms period to the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911), it has a significant study value.
SCANTECH 3D is proud to have worked with Zhejiang University in the case of 3D digitization and monitoring engineering of Han Sanlao Stone Chamber. With nearly a hundred years of exposure to outdoor sunlight and harsh environment, the building is likely to suffer from corrosion, distortion and other potential damage inevitably. It is necessary to monitor and restore the building from time to time.
What roles did KSCAN-Magic and iReal 2E play in this project?
The key requirements for the scanning task are listed in two: the capability to capture fine details and to restore the original colors. To achieve the best result, we used two different 3D scanners, 3D laser scanner KSCAN-Magic and 3D color scanner iReal 2E.
(1) 3D detail scanning
This architecture was built with a number of carved patterns and characters, which enlarged the difficulty of the 3D scanning. However, thanks to our KSCAN-Magic 3D scanner, with up to 0.02 mm of the highest resolution, the entire scanning process was smooth even in the carved areas under direct sunlight. What is more, the 3D scanner can scan details on highly-reflective and dark surfaces.
(2) 3D color scanning
As for those areas with fewer details, for example, a large area with no carvings and plain features, we adopted iReal 2E 3D scanner. Because of its large Field of View (FoV), it works extremely smooth on medium to large-sized items with lower requirements for details. What is more, its color scanning ability saves time for post-processing. Therefore, iReal 2E 3D color scanner becomes a cost-effective choice in the market.
The conservation of ancient architecture is not a walk in the park, it requires long-term data archiving and data monitoring at least twice a year. In this way, we could monitor the condition of the building and prevent it from any further damage caused by all kinds of factors. With the help of 3D scanning technology, the conservation becomes easier and more effective.
In summary, by combining KSCAN-Magic and iReal 2E together in Han Sanlao Stone Chamber Scanning Work, the work efficiency of both on-site work and post-processing have been largely increased. One for the fine details, and one for large plain fields and colorful areas.
